چکیده

Although mixed extensions of finite games always admit equilibria, this is not the case for countable games, the best-known example being Wald’s pick-the-larger-integer game. Several authors have provided conditions for the existence of equilibria in infinite games. These conditions are typically of topological nature and are rarely applicable to countable games. Here we establish an existence result for the equilibrium of countable games when the strategy sets are a countable group and the payoffs are functions of the group operation. In order to obtain the existence of equilibria, finitely additive mixed strategies have to be allowed. This creates a problem of selection of a product measure of mixed strategies. We propose a family of such selections and prove existence of an equilibrium that does not depend on the selection. As a byproduct we show Supported by Swiss SNF Sinergia project CRSI22-130435 that if finitely additive mixed strategies are allowed, then Wald’s game admits an equilibrium. We also prove existence of equilibria for nontrivial extensions of matching-pennies and rock-scissors-paper. Finally we extend the main results to uncountable games.

Large Games with Countable Characteristics∗

We consider anonymous games with an atomless probability space of players in which players’ characteristics are countable. Our main result shows that the set of equilibrium distributions coincides with the set of distributions induced by equilibrium strategies together with the function assigning characteristics to players. This results implies the existence of Nash equilibria in continuous lar...

The Structure of Non-zero-sum Stochastic Games

Strategies in a stochastic game are δ > 0 perfect if the induced one-stage games have certain δ equilibrium properties. Sufficient conditions are proven for the existence of δ perfect strategies for all δ > 0 implying the existence of equilibria for every > 0. Using this approach we prove the existence of equilibria for every > 0 for a special class of quitting games. The important technique of...

Existence of nash equilibria for constrained stochastic games

In this paper, we consider constrained noncooperativeN -person stochastic games with discounted cost criteria. The state space is assumed to be countable and the action sets are compact metric spaces. We present three main results. The first concerns the sensitivity or approximation of constrained games. The second shows the existence of Nash equilibria for constrained games with a finite state...

Nearly compact and continuous normal form games: characterizations and equilibrium existence

Normal form games are nearly compact and continuous (NCC) if they can be understood as games played on strategy spaces that are dense subsets of the strategy spaces of larger compact games with jointly continuous payoffs. There are intrinsic algebraic, measure theoretic, functional analysis, and finite approximability characterizations of NCC games. NCC games have finitely additive equilibria, ...

Single Crossing Properties and the Existence of Pure Strategy Equilibria in Games of Incomplete Information

First Draft: August 1996; This Draft: March, 1999 Abstract: This paper derives sufficient conditions for a class of games of incomplete information, such as first-price auctions, to have pure strategy Nash equilibria (PSNE). The paper treats games were each agent has private information about her own type, and the types are drawn from an atomless joint probability distribution. The previous lit...
